October 14, 2016  Biblia Sacra Latin Course Levels 1 and 2I have received the material and I am greatly enjoying the studies! I am a bit slow at it but I am confident that I will improve. I have both cd's lessons 1 and 11, and the Vulgate Bible. So excited.K.S. from Canada

May 15, 2013  The Complete Douay Rheims Bible 5 Volumes

To own this facsimilied set of the Douay Rheims is an honor; I'm proud of this particular english translation because , for some reason, it literally feels holier than the numerous translations out there. Per the physical attributes of the set, the hardcover binding is sturdy and very well made, the entire set is heavy but it's worth the heft due to the letter-sized pages, which are standard 20 lb. pages, not the flimsy sheets usu. found in bibles.
If I were a demon, I wouldn't want Catholics (or anybody for that matter) reading this translation since it just feels like that much of a weapon against evil, which is what every Bible should be. God bless always

February 22, 2013  The Complete Douay Rheims Bible 5 Volumes

Wanted to let you know I received my five Douay-Rheims Bibles. I have started reading the
Old Testament and I'm really enjoying reading it. Before ordering these bibles from you
several people had told me they thought these Bibles would be too difficult to read since they were originally written in Old English. I have to say this is definitely not true. After getting used to
the Old English style, which really is not that difficult to do, these bibles are very understandable.
Further, the Bibles are beautifully printed. A blessing to read. Thank you so much for bringing the true and original Douay-Rheims Bibles back to us. I feel in some ways that God directed me to
your website to find these treasures. Thank you also for your fantastic customer service.
Your replies to my questions we're always quick and detailed. I really appreciated this.
May God bless you and your work.

June 11, 2011  De Imitatione Christi

I just received the Imitatio Christi this morning. Thank you so much. It is good to see classic Church Latin works like this back in print. The Imitatio Christi is the second most widely read work after the Bible (in the class of spiritual reading for sure, and maybe overall). God bless you and your work.

May 26, 2011  The Complete Douay Rheims Bible 5 Volumes

Ave,
First, thank you for making this Bible available.  The CD arrived only a couple of days after I placed my order, and the 5 volumes of the Bible arrived in less than a week.  Great service.  I am sorry I didn't contact you sooner but I have been too busy enjoying my new Bible.  Thanks again and keep up the great work.

April 06, 2011  Liturgical Latin, A Textbook and Dictionary

Thank you for the book, Liturgical Latin, A Textbook and Dictionary.  My ordering experience was fantastic!  I received prompt responses to inquiries and a fast shipping turnaround with my order.  The book is of exceptional quality, both construction and content.  The lessons are clear and concise with numerous pertinent examples and exercises.  One drawback, if it can be called that, is that the solutions to the lesson exercises are not provided.  Solution sets would be very beneficial for beginning students, but otherwise a great book.  Thank you again!  May God continue to bless you!

October 27, 2010  The Complete Douay Rheims Bible 5 Volumes

If it's given any thought at all by English-speaking Catholics, the original Douay Rheims is usually dismissed as being unreadable.  After spending several weeks with it, I can confirm this reputation is undeserved.  On the contrary, I find the translation clear and precise; it benefits greatly by tracking so closely to the Latin of the Vulgate.  I prefer this translation to Bishop Challoner's mislabeled "revision", which takes as much from the King James as from the original DR, and ends up being less aesthetically pleasing than either.

Regarding this particular facsimile, it is excellent.  The print is large and easy to read.  The orthography is initially strange, but it did not take me long to become accustomed to it.  However, the marginal notes and end-of-chapter annotations are in small print -- even in this oversize format -- and can be difficult to read.  Having said that, they are very much worth the effort needed to decipher them.  Written during the Counter-Reformation in response to Protestant heresies, it is a mistake to think these notes have lost any relevance with the passage of time.  On several occasions already the notes have shed light on passages that have puzzled me for years.

In sum, the original DR is the best English version of The Holy Bible I have yet encountered.  It is a shame that it has languished in obscurity for almost four centuries.  I would very much like to see this reprinted by an established publisher, with updated orthography but otherwise unchanged (and with the notes intact).  Until that day arrives, this facsimile edition comes highly recommended.

May 28, 2010  Biblia Sacra Vulgatae Editionis

I ordered the Vercellone Clementine Vulgate Bible and I was very pleasantly surprised.  The main concern for me was that the Bible be
accurate, as I have found that many of the more recent versions of the Vulgate are not.  I decided to try this one and, upon receiving it, did a
cross check against my correct older Clementine. Everything in the Vercellone Bible matches exactly with the correct versions.

As for the physical characteristics of the Bible, it comes with a glossy cover, very nicely done.  The volumes are well made and heavy duty for
long wear.  The pages are facsimiles and, as such, are not quite as precise as ordinary printing as for example in this testimonial.  However,
it is nevertheless easy to read and there are no pages or sections that I have found so far (and I've gone through both volumes) that are difficult to read.  So it shouldn't be a factor in buying the volumes.  For the price, this is an excellent buy, if you're looking for a Vulgate that is
accurate vis-a-vis the original Hebrew and Greek (Masoretic Hebrew and Textus Receptus Greek)."

May 28, 2010  Biblia Sacra juxta Vulgatam Clementinam

First, I just received my copy of the Tweedale vulgate, excellent work. The print is small, but not a problem for my eyes. I had the Tweedale on
my Sony Reader, but it was somewhat annoying not being able to flip back and forth. It is great to have a hard copy version of the Clementine to read for such an affordable price. Anywhere else is in the hundreds of dollars.

January 26, 2010  Liturgical Latin, Its Origins and Character

I ran across a reference to "Liturgical Latin, Its Origins and Character" on a blog that I happened to read and went about looking for it with my usual sources to no avail. I ran a search and came across your website. The price was reasonable and the delivery time was acceptable so I placed the order and to my surprise, the book appeared in much less time than was quoted. The quality was excellent and I heartily recommend this book for anyone who is concerned with our Sacred Liturgy. Thanks so much for the fine work that you are doing. I will bookmark your site and check with you on future items.

January 12, 2010  Concordance to the Vulgate Edition of the Holy Bible-Volumes I and II (Vulgatae Editionis Bibliorum Sacrorum Concordantiae)

Having just received the Concordance, I am very pleased with the over-all quality of the volumes, especially considering the very affordable price. Presumably these were printed from a scanned copy but the print is clear, easy to read and stands out well on the pages. Thank you, and may God bless you, for making this very useful work available again.

November 16, 2009  Biblia Sacra juxta Vulgatam Clementinam

I received the Tweedale Clementine Vulgate yesterday and I am quite pleased. If you are looking for something to tide you over until the Desclee facsimile edition becomes available, as I was, this is just the thing. The print is on the small side, but not a problem for my bifocals. I like the paper. The opacity of the paper and the clarity of the print makes the reading experience more comfortable and pleasant.

November 04, 2009  The Divine Office. How to Say it Devoutly. How to Make it a Pleasure.

Hello, it was a blessing and a miracle that I found this website. I feel so blessed. I have two new great books that I have been searching for and couldn't find elsewhere. I love my books, Visits To Jesus in the Tabernacle by Fr. Lasance and THE DIVINE OFFICE by FR. Paul O'Sullivan, my favorite priest. I love these books and I love this website. I feel like I have a new friend. I shall keep in touch with you so I may find something else in the future. God bless you for your fine work. May they continue many years to come.

November 04, 2009  Biblia Sacra, Vulgatae Editionis, Sixit V. Pont. Max. Jussu recognita ed Clementis VIII auctorita te edita

I would most certainly buy a copy of your planned Latin Bible, would even be cool to have an electronic edition (pdf) with the book as well. Based on the scans, the colour one has a cream background (age/condition) whereas the B&W has a white background. So unless you can get the colour one on white then I'd prefer the B&W. My prayers are with you. This will be amazing!

November 04, 2009  A Short Historical and Critical Analysis of the Douay Rheims Translation of the Holy Scriptures

Dear Max,  I have received my order this minute - 3.30 p.m., Wednesday October 8 - with the greatest delight & gratitude to you for all you have done to make this possible.  At 89 years of age, now living in retirement, I am able to devote time to things dearest to my heart, such as what Christine Mohrmann & Fr. Hugh Pope have so well elucidated for us.  You have put into my hands these two indispensable aids to solve some questions for me.  God bless you for your kindness & generosity to me.

November 04, 2009  The Complete Douay Rheims Bible 5 Volumes

Maximus,

Here is my quite tardy testimonial.  Mea culpa.  I am enjoying the D-R Bible quite a bit, and am incorporating it into my daily reading and worship quickly.  Thanks again.

"When one hears the words "facsimile edition", one immediately thinks of nearly unreadable Shakespearean folios or a set of Paradise Lost.  This edition of the Douay-Rheims Bible has none of these flaws.  There are a few fuzzy spots and glitches, but this is head and shoulders the best facsimile edition I've ever seen of any book of antiquity.  Also, the publisher has done the Catholic Church a huge favor by bringing the D-R back into print.  At last, one can read the original Catholic Bible as it was translated into English from the Vulgate.  Any serious student of the Bible, or any Catholic interested in the true English translation owes it to himself or herself to get and read this bible.

I love the look of the 1881 sample pages, much nicer than the 1901. I would be very interested in purchasing a copy. Do you think you could produce it for around twice the price of a comparable quality English bible?

I have downloaded the 1901 pdf file and use it regularly for study. Thanks ever so much for the pointer.

Hello,

I just received Liturgical Latin and I really enjoy this book!  I am teaching myself latin because I just started saying the rosary in latin and would like to be able to speak the language well enough to know exactly what I am saying.  It breaks everything down and makes it easy to understand plus it includes the prayers of the mass as examples for grammar.

I read about your Vulgate reprint project on your web page, and I am writing to let you know that I consider this a great idea.
I would be definitely interested in buying it.

Right now, the only Clementine available in print in N. America is the Madrid Clementine, available from American Classical League.
It is a very plain Bible - so I think there could be a market for beautifully printed Vulgate.

I strongly encourage you to pursue this project. I would definitely purchase a copy if it were appropriately priced. I might also suggest you do something along the lines of a "pocket size" for seminarians (like myself) who would like to have something easy to carry with my breviary. All the same, I would buy a copy of either size.

January 04, 2009  The Complete Douay Rheims Bible 5 Volumes

(This comment is referring to the CD ROM only)

I’ve been enjoying the CD very much.  Once one gets into the groove of reading that font, etc., the reading flows effortlessly.  And it doesn’t take all that long to get accustomed to it.  I was reading their notes for St. Thomas of Canterbury today and learned a lot from them.

(After his printed edition arrived, W.A. made this comment)

The Douay Rheims arrived last Tuesday, the 20th, and I have been enjoying it ever since.  They are indeed beautiful.  The study notes alone are worth the price of the volumes.  I have been using them in my daily devotions.  The print is clear and legible, the binding strong.  Best of all from a practical standpoint, the division into five volumes makes reading and studying very manageable because no volume is too bulky or awkward to hold.  Thank you so much for reprinting them.

September 05, 2008  Latin-English Dictionary

This customer ordered two sets!-

This is a difficult volume to find, and the quality of the reproduction is exceptionally good, especially considering the age of the exemplar. The perfect binding appears sturdy enough to stand up to repeated use, which this dictionary surely deserves. It is a beautifully produced edition at a very affordable price. Not only is this convenient dictionary useful in its own right (especially because of its many citations), but is also a very welcome companion to William Smith and Theophilus Hall's English-Latin Dictionary (currently available from Bolchazy-Carducci). Maximus Scriptorius has done Latinists and Latin students a great service in making this dictionary easily available once again.

July 24, 2008  Latin-English Dictionary

We were pleased to receive this review from William Linney of Linney's Latin Class and Getting Started with Latin.

"...This unabridged dictionary, in two volumes, claims to have every Latin word in it, from all Latin literature.

I know that's an ambitious claim, so I tested it by looking up the most obscure word I could thing of: subnervo. I had trouble finding this word in any dictionary a few months back, and I doubted it would be in this dictionary. But lo and behold, there it was. The dictionary entry gave the literal meaning, the normal meaning, and even a figurative meaning, along with citations of Latin literature where the word could be found. I was very pleased to have such a resource on my shelf.

This dictionary is not cheap, but it's really worth having on your shelf if you translate texts of any kind..."

July 16, 2008  Latin-English Dictionary

Max,
Received the dictionary last Saturday. It took less than two weeks. That is a speedy service. Very happy with the good quality of the reprint. I like the handy size of the dictionary.
I own both Lewis and Short's A Latin Dictionary and Oxford Latin Dictionary. I can list the following uniqueness of the Smith's in comparison to the other two.
(1) Comparative philological remarks on some entries to aid linguistic cognition to other ancient and modern languages.
(2) All plant and animal words are given binomial Linnaean naming as part of their translation/definition.
In summary, great service and beautiful book.
